Rust is having its moment. No longer a niche language, it’s now a legitimate career consideration for developers. The case for learning Rust is real, but it’s not without its costs. You’ll find Rust in systems programming and infrastructure, like the Linux kernel and Android. It’s also big in WebAssembly development - Cloudflare uses it extensively, and AWS has significant adoption across its services.
But Rust isn’t everywhere. Web application backend development is still dominated by Python, Go, and Java. Enterprise software and data science and ML aren’t big on Rust either. And if you’re looking to get into mobile development, you might want to consider another language. So, what’s the career return on learning Rust? It’s a way to complement existing specializations and stand out in a crowded job market. But let’s be real - Rust is hard to learn. The borrow checker requires a mental model shift that takes weeks to internalize and months to become fluent with. You’ll spend days to weeks getting basic programs to compile, and 2-4 months understanding ownership and borrowing intuitively.
Developers with a background in C or C++ will adapt most quickly, while those coming from garbage-collected languages will take longer. So, should you learn Rust? If you’re already working in systems or performance-critical code, it might be a good fit. If you’re targeting roles at companies known for Rust adoption, it’s worth learning. And if you’re interested in WebAssembly development or contributing to open-source tooling, Rust is a good choice.
But if your current or target role is web application development, or if you’re at an early career stage, learning Rust might not be the best use of your time. Go is often a better near-term career move for backend infrastructure roles. And let’s not forget - learning Rust takes time.
